Year 3 Go On the Hunt at Creswell Crags!

On Tuesday this week, Year 3 travelled back in time to the Stone Age during their exciting visit to Creswell Crags Museum and Heritage Centre. Taking part in the On The Hunt programme, the children were fully immersed in life during the Ice Age — and what an adventure it was!

Split into two Stone Age tribes, the Woolly Rhinos and the Cave Bears, the children explored the famous Robin Hood Cave during the Life in the Ice Age cave tour. Wearing helmets and headlamps, they ventured deep into the cave to learn how our ancient ancestors survived in such harsh conditions and left behind clues carved into the rock.

Child studying a stone age tool

Back above ground, the classes got stuck into some hands-on activities. In the Stone Age Safari, children examined prehistoric tools, artefacts, and even replicas of ancient bones and instruments. The session was bursting with fascinating facts and sparked many curious questions!

Practising to throw our spears!

ater in the day, the children learned and practised Stone Age hunting techniques, including spear throwing using traditional 'atlatls'. Under expert guidance, they tested their accuracy and got a sense of what life as a prehistoric hunter might have been like.Everyone had a fantastic time and came away with a deeper understanding of Stone Age life — plus a few muddy shoes! A big thank you to the staff at Creswell Crags for making the day so engaging, and to the adults who came along to support the trip.

Well done Year 3 — true Stone Age explorers!
