Class 3's Trip to Perlethorpe - Anglos Saxons and Vikings

Monday 10th May 2021

On our visit to Perlethorpe today we were transported back to an Anglo Saxon settlement in the morning. We were all given our Saxon name badges and experienced an Anglo Saxon house and found out how they lived, what they wore and ate. Also, we found out about the different jobs the children, women and men had to do and about the battles they took part in. 

   

  

 

 

Later we had an orienteering challenge where we had to find different runes hidden in the woods and then converting them into our letters and cracked the puzzle.

 

  

In the afternoon we crossed over the boundary and visited the Viking house. After learning more about the Vikings we had a go at grinding corn, making Viking pendants and playing a shield game as well as having a look and handling Viking artifacts.

Class 4's World War Two WOW Day

Wednesday 11th November 2020

The children had a real evacuee experience when they arrived at school today. They all dressed in clothes worn by children during World War Two and had their Gas Masks in their boxes. The children assembled on the playground before being taken to the school hall to be billeted with their evacuee families.

They then had suitcases to examine and see some artefacts from World War Two like the clothes they wore, games the children played and food they ate. Also they made paper chains ready for the Street Party that they had at the end of the day.

To the children's relief they were able to return home to their real families at the end of the day!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Class 3's Stone Age to Iron Age Houses

The children made model Stone Age and Iron Age houses by cutting out templates and folding and joining them together using tabs and glue.

They then fastened the houses onto a base to form a village and decorated them using earth tone paints, moss, leaves and twigs.

 

  

Class 3's Trip to Cresswell Crags

Friday 25th September 2020

We visited Creswell Crags, which is one of Britain’s most important Ice Age archaeological and geological sites. We learned about why people from this period resided in caves, how they choose which caves to live in and how they attempted to keep them safe from predators.

Our guide taught us how people in the Stone Age would have looked for clues, such as prints on the ground, feathers and poo, to avoid dangerous predators and to hunt.

  

We learned how they would have hunted using a spear. We all had a go at trying to hit the bison with the spear. Some of us had a fantastic shot!

 

 

Next, our guide taught us how to create fire with wood and friction, the wood became warm, but it was hard work! She then showed us how they used steel and flint that they struck together to make a spark, this time she was able to make fire.

As we approached the cave (Robin Hood Cave) we discussed that this cave being on the sunny side of the gorge would have encouraged Stone Age people to live here, as it would have kept them warmer. Also, we learned that they lit the fire outside their cave to warn off predators as well as to keep warm.

 

  

We saw tools that people in the Stone Age would have used, such as flint, antler and bone. Also, we learned about what they would have worn, and we saw replica skulls found in the cave from people in the Ice Age.

After lunch we learnt all about the different types of animals that lived during the Ice Age, some of them became extinct such as the Saber-Toothed Tiger and Woolly Mammoth, but some are still around today such as the Hyena and Wolf. Our guide showed us a tooth from both the Woolly Mammoth and Saber-Toothed Tiger.

We then looked at lots of bones and had a go at putting an animals Skelton back together before working out which animal it came from.

 

 

 

 

 

Class 4 - Music Lesson

Friday 18th September 2020

Today we used Charanga to appraise a piece of music. The song was Mamma Mia by Abba. Most of the class liked the tune and found it fast paced and uplifting. The music made them want to dance and made the class feel happy. We were able to clap the pulse along with the music and then repeat some rhythms back.

 

 

Class 3 - Stone Age WOW Day

This term Class 3 are learning all about The Stone Age through to the Iron Age in our Topic work.

The children had a wonderful day for our WOW day.

We all came dressed up in Stone Age costumes...

They made woolly mammoths out of milk containers, which we cut down and then covered with paper mache and brown paper...

  

  

And also made bead necklaces out of clay...
